The reason this brief hiatus is so important for me is that it’s a way to reset my metabolism and give my muscles a rest. This way, when I do hit my training hard again, my body will respond more efficiently.
I am a firm believer in allowing proper recovery time. It’s necessary for longevity and long-term health, both mentally and physically.
Everyone’s schedule is different, so for some it may mean a day of rest after training two days, or it may mean a day off after two days on. Some people will choose to train five days in a row, then take a day in the middle of the week with easier training as a way to give themselves a much needed recess.
As for myself, I go for months at a time with intense training and a strict diet because of my grueling competition schedule, so my break will last a bit longer than just a one or two days – more like one or two weeks.
The bottom line is that you shouldn’t ever forget about your recovery. This very small thing will keep you healthier, in balance, and it will prevent you from burning out.
